On our way to Thessaloniki

We got up early and headed to the bus stop for our 8:30 am take off. Redy and Iglee came over to see us off and it felt like someone was slowly ripping my heart out as these two boys, 17 and 14, had tears in their eyes as they hugged us goodbye asking when we will be back.

We got on the bus and headed for Greece's border. We sat at the border for 5 hours just to get across. There were lots of exciting things to watch at the border... cars cutting other cars off in line pulling up about an inch from the other car, very angry men, and some very angry women fighting over something and finally the police had to help. We had to find some way to entertain ourselves. We also had to completely empty the bus, luggage and all, so that a policeman and a drug sniffing dog could check the bus out. We got an all clear. The bus started finally moving again around 5:00 pm and we were on our way.

At one point the bus driver pulls over at a place on the side of the road, gets out and sits down at a table inside and eats. We had no idea what was going on, we thought maybe it was a potty break. Nope, the driver was hungry. So some of us decided to go ahead and order. Ten minutes later the driver gets up and goes outside so we all hurry and finish to get on the bus. Nope, it was time for his smoke break. Finally we all get on the bus and continue on our way. An hour later the back of the bus started to smell like smoke from the engine. The driver pulls over and revs the engine a bunch of times and takes off again only to pull over once again and take all of the water bottles we have to put in the engine. We guessed it was overheating but still had no idea what was going on. We got back on the road again and made it to the Crazy Holidays bus station around 8:00 pm. We then could have tried to take another bus to Ikea then to Perea but opted out for 5 taxis to take us straight to the hotel. We finally arrived, put our bags in our rooms and had dinner at 9:30 pm on the sand of the Mediterranean. It was a hard and trying day but it was beautiful and worth it.

The rest of the evening consisted of walking and ice cream.
